Kelli Wilder and her husband, Michael, embarked on a transformative journey with their pet Cane Corso, Buddha, when they enrolled him in comprehensive dog training at Dan Perata Training (DPT) in October 2023. At just seven months old and weighing nearly 100lbs, Buddha's training was not just about obedience but also about shaping his behavior by involving the owners actively in the process.

The decision to seek out professional training stemmed from Kelli and Michael's previous experiences with dogs, including growing up with German Shepherd Dogs – and as a couple, adopting an adult German Shepherd and also a mixed breed rescue puppy. New to owning a mastiff dog, they realized that while each dog has unique needs, there are common training basics that form the foundation of good behavior. Through thorough research, Kelli found Dan Perata Training (DPT), drawn to its training program that emphasized active owner involvement over traditional methods that sidelined owners.

During the initial five-week training period at DPT, Kelli and Michael faced challenges that demanded a significant time commitment. The twice-weekly weekday owner/dog camp sessions and weekend training at home required a shift in mindset from merely caring for Buddha to investing focused time in training him. Despite the initial hurdles, the training bore positive results, with Buddha learning essential commands that effectively addressed his behavioral issues. Kelli underscores the importance of these commands in setting boundaries for Buddha and correcting his behavior when needed.

Through training, Kelli and Michael gained insights into Buddha's need for mental stimulation, which, when unmet, led to behavioral issues. Training helped Buddha focus, tire out, and consequently exhibit a calmer demeanor. Moreover, it assisted in teaching him to respect boundaries, especially concerning his protectiveness towards their home. By understanding his needs through training, Kelli and Michael could help Buddha behave appropriately towards visitors and in various situations.

Kelli stresses the indispensable nature of ongoing training in maintaining a dog's obedience and ensuring that they stay on track with their learning. Reflecting on Buddha's progress, Kelli highlights the importance of consistency and regular practice in reinforcing commands. While Buddha (now 135 lbs.) may occasionally test boundaries or delay responses, continued training and discipline are key in keeping him sharp and responsive.

To enhance the training experience, Kelli advocates for the effective use of tools like the DPT training box that provides a controlled and distraction-free environment for practice. She notes that this tool helps reinforce training, allowing dogs like Buddha to focus solely on the task at hand and stay sharp. Spending time in these structured environments frequently aids in maintaining a dog's progress and serves as a reminder for both the pet and the owners to address any areas needing improvement.

Through their journey at DPT, Kelli and Michael have not only honed their understanding of Buddha's needs and behaviors but also deepened their bond with him. By creating a secure and confident environment through training, they have cultivated a strong relationship with their pet based on mutual respect and communication.

In conclusion, Kelli's experience with structured and engaging dog training at Dan Perata Training exemplifies the transformative impact of active owner participation in a pet's training. By understanding a dog's unique needs, consistently practicing commands, and utilizing effective training tools, owners can build a strong bond with their pets while ensuring their well-being and obedience. Ultimately, investing time and effort in structured training programs can lead to a harmonious relationship between owners and their furry companions.

In addition, Kelli would like to highlight Berkeley Humane Society as a nonprofit organization she values and supports. With a history of adopting dogs from them, she appreciates the hard work and dedication they put into caring for animals in need of loving and safe homes.
